Programme of Work and Agenda

Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, speaks at the treaty body strengthening consultations for States party to international human rights treaties held by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). On stage, from left to right are: Ivan Simonovic, Assistant Secretary-General in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, President of the General Assembly; Ms. Pillay; and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. 02 April 2012. United Nations, New York. Beginning in 2015, ECOSOC moved to a July-July cycle and now issues one provisional agenda document for the entire session.

The provisional agenda for the July-July cycle carries the sequential number "1":

  • symbol pattern: E/year/1
  • example: E/2018/1

An annotated agenda is issued for the July-July cycle. This document carries the sequential number "100":

  • symbol pattern: E/year/100
  • example: E/2017/100

Both provide information on the authority of each agenda item and the major documentation scheduled to be submitted under it. Additional information is available on the ECOSOC website.

Before 2015, the organizational session and substantive session had separate agendas with the organization session assigned the sequential number "2" for the year and the substantive session the number "100".
