United Nations Economic and Social Council Opens its Sixth Session  General view of opening meeting of 6th session of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The 18-member organ of the United Nations was established by the Charter "to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights...to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.. .to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social development of all peoples." At its sixth session the Economic and Social Council deferred consideration of the draft Declaration and draft Covenant to the next session to allow the Commission opportunity to review the draft in light of observations received from governments. By Resolution 116(VI) F of 2 March 1948 the Council "directed the Commission on Human Rights, through its Drafting Committee and at its next session, to give particular attention to the implementation aspect of the Bill of Human Rights".
