In 2000, the Millennium Declaration identified fundamental values essential to international relations (A/RES/55/2). The Millennium Development Goals set targets for realizing these values around the world by 2015 and served as the focus for UN work throughout the period:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Global partnership for development

Millennium Summit

Millennium Declaration (A/RES/55/2is the outcome document of the Millennium Summit.

  • Contains a statement of values, principles and objectives for the international agenda for the twenty-first century
  • A/RES/55/162 requested the Secretary-General "to prepare a long-term 'road map' towards the implementation of the Millennium Declaration within the United Nations system"
  • Road map towards the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Declaration : Report of the Secretary-General (A/56/326) sets out the proposed Millennium Development Goals
  • A/RES/56/95 "Recommends that the 'road map' be considered as a useful guide in the implementation of the Millennium Declaration ... and invites ... interested parties to consider the 'road map' when formulating plans for implementing goals related to the Declaration"
  • No resolution of the General Assembly in 2000 includes the text of the goals
