Portrait of Dag HammarskjöldDag Hammarskjöld was born on 29 July 1905, in Sweden.  He served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations from April 1953 until  September 1961.  He took the oath of office for his first term on April 7 1953 and the oath for his second term on 26 September 1957.  He served in this capacity until 18 September 1961, when he died in a plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo.
